#1 This guy is an Army escort. The United States is forcing Cherokee people to resettle over a thousand miles away from their homes in northern Georgia.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

#2 Those cases are Supreme Court cases, The Cherokee people played by the rules. They did everything they could to assimilate to the American way of live. They were farmers and craftsmen. Happy to learn the laws of the new dominant power. They took legal action when their rights were encroached upon. Several cases were decided in their favor and President Jackson still was able to force them out of their lands.

#3 This woman is seeing here entire way of life uprooted. She had learned to trust and adopt the ways of the Europeans who became Americans. She has had a comfortable home life with many or more of the same things as other Southern farmers. The only difference was that they were white. She now faces a future of travel over a thousand miles to an unsettled plain, completely foreign to the woods she has been accustomed to. Her challenge is to somehow keep her family together and bring them up in a civilized way like her parents did for her.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

The artist is portraying the Cherokee as a civilized people, maintaining dignity in the face of tyranny. Look at the wagons, clothing and wares of these people. They are not nomads. They are leaving well established homes.
