How did the cold war tension subside after cuban missile crisis?

Both the USSR and the US realized how close they had come to nuclear war. A secure line was set up directly between them (the famous "red telephone") so that both leaders could talk directly with each other and both made efforts to control and even reduce nuclear weapons within their respective arsenals. A period of "detente" followed the Missile Crisis as both sides attempted to relax tensions.
