In literature, what is it called when an author uses a literary device such as plot development to create an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually stated?

Rhetoric is the ancient art of argumentation and discourse. Thus, rhetorical devices would be the devices used to manipulate the language to effectively transmit the author’s message to a reader. Whereas, literary devices are applicable to literature that has a primary universal function as an art form expressing ideas through language to readers.
