which statement is both true for plants and animals?

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

Can we have a little more information, please post the whole questions so we can give you a definite response.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They both use sunlight to generate ATP for energy. They both form ADP as an energy storage molecule. They both need to consume sugar to store energy. They both break a phosphate bond of ATP to release energy.

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

Ok, thank you, so what is your guess, first?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they both form ADP as an energy storage?

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

I could see where you are going with that, but there is a better answer, all cells use ATP the same way, and from what we know about ATP is that when ATP occurs, energy is released.

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

Think about it this way, ADP is useless unless it is converted to ATP. And since I just said ATP = energy release, what is the better option?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They both break a phosphate bond of ATP to release energy.

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

Correct, because like I said ADP is useless and therefore holds some energy, but because ATP releases energy, don't you think that it would hold more energy than ADP? ENergy is stored in bonds. Like two people holding hands, it takes energy to hold them together. There are three bonds of phosphate in ATP and only two in ADP, therefore ATP has more energy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you that makes more sense then how they taught me.

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

yup no problem, if you are still confused just use this website, it's easy to follow http://biologysuccess.hubpages.com/hub/Adenosine-TriPhosphat-ATP
