May someone tell me how to find range of a quadratic expression

First of all, do you know what the graph of a quadratic looks like? It either looks roughly like this:|dw:1401426126634:dw| or it looks like this:|dw:1401426164937:dw| In the first case, there is only a minimum in the range and there is no maximum. Similarly, in the second case, there is only a maximum in the range and no minimum. Do you know how \(a\) (the coefficient of \(x^2\)) is related to the shape of the graph?
