How to find the values of x and y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1401428365805:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

george has 4.8m of timber he wishes to make the steps. He needs 5 steps to rise to a total height of 1.2mfrom the ground. he uses all the wood to constuct the steps , including supports (represented by the blue lines in the diagram)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the lines represented by y are not blue lines

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iambatman could you please help me on this one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried to use pythagorean theorem

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Can you take a screenshot and post the original diagram if possible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use pythagorean theorem to the bigger triangle and find y and then using pythagorean theorem again for a small triangle and find x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried to do that but i got a different answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4.8^2 + 1.2^2= (5y)^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that how you find y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and how do you find x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got y=0.98something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y^2-0.24^2= x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you dont divide 0.98 by 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I already did that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=0.24m y=0.32m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

these are the answers in the textbook

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh I see, the length is not 4.8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so to find the length l= 4.8-1.2= 3.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry dude, I don't get the answers u mentioned

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is a photo i have attached

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets try this once again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if im not mistaken 4.8= 10x + 2.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because it says that he used all his wood to construct all the blue lines

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where did you come up with this equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take the perimeter of the whole picture

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that perimeter is equal to 4.8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solving this equation will give you x=0.24

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

we should get below system right @d3v13 5x+5y+5x+1.2*2 = 4.8 x^2 + 0.24^2 = y^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry I misread the whole question earlier

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes ganeshie is right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you both @d3v13 @ganeshie8 for your help

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

this was a bit confusing earlier w/o the attachment lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im going to give you @d3v13 a medal could you please give @ganeshie8 one. i would really appreciate it if you did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure thing
