OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Zionist Jews had been moving into the area since the late 1800s. Various organizations formed to promote Jewish settlement in the area. Most of the organizations also called for a Jewish homeland. After WWI, European powers drew some lines on the map and assigned themselves to administer different parts of the Middle East. The area that is now Israel was part of the British Mandate. After WWII the idea of a Jewish homeland was more popular than ever. The new United Nations passed a resolution that ended the British Mandate. May14, 1948, David Ben Gurion read a statement from Jewish organizations that Israeli declared independence. The British Mandate expired on May 15 and Egypt, Syria, Iraq and TransJordan all attacked Israel starting that day. The Israeli's held there own and turned back the Arabs. The United States, Britain and others were quick to recognize the new nation. The United Nations admitted Israel as a nation in 1949. The Soviet-Union never missed an opportunity to oppose the US. They sided with the Arab countries and supplied them with equipment and training for many years.
