A group of malcontents- powerful men who believed that Caesar was too powerful and too popular- chose to kill him. It was not a decision voted on in the assembly house.

They believed that his power would end their representative government, so they performed a long-standing Roman traditiona- kill the threat! 

However, by killing Caesar, they brought forth the end of the Roman Republic.
