One example would be when he was escaping from the cyclops, Polyphemus. He revealed his real name to Polyphemus, and in doing so released the wrath of Poseidon. Poseidon was angered that Odysseus maimed his cyclops son, and created a storm and other variables that made it harder for Odysseus to get home.
