Problem: The rectangular playing area of a professional football field is 100 yards long. The perimeter of the playing area is 920 feet. The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is [P equals two times l plus two times w] . How many feet wide is the playing area? Don't forget to convert the length from yards to feet. (There are 3 feet in 1 yard.) Solution: There are two ways to solve this problem. You can solve the formula for the unknown variable, then substitute. Or, you can substitute, then solve the resulting equation. Assignment: Your assignment is to solve the problem both ways. A worksheet is provided for you to record your work as you complete this project.
One Way Use algebraic steps to solve the formula for the desired variable. Then, substitute known values and simplify.
Another Way Substitute known values into the formula and simplify where possible. Use algebraic steps to solve the equation for the remaining variable.
@JGhost ?
Gotcha
Method 1: So, the field is 100 yards long - converted to feet it's 300 feet. Take your equation for rectangular perimeter and plug it in. P = 2(l) + 2(w) Now what do you have?
p=920=600+2w
920-600/2=w
320/2
160
w=160
Great!
I just didn't know what to do for part 2
the other section
Way 2
Now for Method 2, you already know what to expect. Take the equation: P = 2L + 2W and simplify it without plugging anything in yet...
P = 2L + 2W -2L -2L ------------------ P - 2L = 2W Next, isolate W.
p=2[l+w]?
920-600=2w-600 320=2w
920-600=600+2w-600 320=2w sry about the typo
You got the right answer for Method 2, I just think that it's a bit unclear. The teacher wants you to simplify it out before adding any numbers. Take a look:
The teacher wants you to simplify the entire equation without numbers at first. Given: P - 2L = 2W You would divide each side of the equal sign by 2 to isolate W. You'd then have: P/2 - L = W Then just plug everything in: 920/2 - 300 = W Simplify: 460 - 300 = W 160 = W
