How does the wave change if you shake it up and down as opposed to back and forth?

If you shake it up and down, you result in vertical waves. While on the other hand, if you shake something back and forth, your result shall be a horizontal wave. :)

@Keeli_Grace Astronomers have found that light waves coming from a given point on the Sun have a slightly higher frequency than light from a point on the opposite side of the sun. What do these measurements tell you about the Sun’s motions?
