Do you know what extraneous means?

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

Let's start off from the beginning, what have you done so far?

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

Yeah it's D ^_~ -x = \(\ \sf \sqrt{2x + 15} \) Undo the square root, you get: x^2 = 2x + 15 Now, move the whole equation to x^2 -2x - 15 = 0 Now factor, 1 * -15 = -15, -5 + 3 = -2, -5*3 = -15 (x - 5)(x + 3) = 0 x = 5 x = -3 When you plug in 5 you get -(5) = \(\ \sf \sqrt{2(5) + 15} \) -5 = √25 -5 = 5 <-- this is NOT true, -5 does not equal 5
