Solution. a) The key to simplifying 5 x + 10 3 x + 6 is in realising that we can switch the order of the terms. That is, we can write 5 x + 10 3 x + 6 = 5 x 3 x + 10 + 6. Note the way the + / ‘s remain part of each term. Thus, 5 x + 10 3 x + 6 simplifies to give 2 x + 16. b) 3 x 2 + 5 x + 12 2 x 2 10 x + 3 is the same as 3 x 2 2 x 2 + 5 x 10 x + 12 + 3 which simplifies to give x 2 5 x + 15. c) With the expression 3 ab + 2 a 2 + 2 ba 4 a 2 , we note that the products a × b and b × a are in fact equal. {e.g. consider 2 × 3 and 3 × 2 both of which equal 6.} Hence 3 ab + 2 a 2 + 2 ba 4 a 2 = 3 ab + 2 ab + 2 a 2 4 a 2 which equals 5 ab 2 a 2
