RED SCARE. can anyone explain to me what exactly is the red scare? I've been studying this for a while but i can never learn exactly what it is

Well, during the Cold War, there were rising tensions between the communists and liberalists. McCarthy took advantage of his position and the general fear of communists to his advantage and began to abuse his authority. It started with anyone who had connections to socialist groups being sent to jail, but soon grew to accommodate anyone the government didn't like. So they blacklisted them. This created an era of fear, where everyone was terrified of being blacklisted or known as communist in America.

Okay, so basically to understand what the Red Scare was, you have to understand the world political scene at the time.

Lets go back: The time was just after WWII. The Soviet Union, and the United States of America were the two dominant superpowers at the time. We didn't like each other though, and pretty much the only reason we were on the same team in WWII was that Hitler attacked Stalin and the Soviets.

So, this started what was known as the Cold War. Both of our nations were experimenting with the new power of atomic weapons. We were also bent on conquest. The Soviets started annexing countries in Eastern Europe, and so basically the United States were aiding anyone who would say they didn't like the Soviets and Communism. Since the main color for Communism was red. We started calling the mass paranoia of the time the "red scare."

We were terrified of Communists infiltrating our country and destroying our way of life. So like the person above said, we had witch trials of sorts. The most famous of which being the McCarthy trials in which McCarthy used the paranoia of the time to take down his enemies by accusing them of being Communists and rigging the trials.

The cold war also spawned such wars as the wars in Vietnam and Korea.

so basically it was called the RED scare because the colors of the soviets was red. the red scare is the name given tot he paranoia that was going on in that time due to the soviets infiltrating the communism government in the U.S. in other words the red scare is the name given to the soviets and their communism power and goal of spreading it. am i right?
