Seven Question Of The Day (S.Q.O.T.D.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An art gallery is a 6-story square pyramid with base area of half an acre. Estimate the volume in cubic yards of the art gallery. In your calculations, use 1 acre = 4840 yd2 and 1 story = 10 ft. I'm thinking its 16,100 yd^3

@anteater

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I answered this question before but forgot what's the answer to it.

OpenStudy (anteater):

thinking :)

OpenStudy (anteater):

LOL

OpenStudy (anteater):

So square pyramid would again have a volume of 1/3 bh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anteater):

But base area is easier to calculate since it's a rectangle

OpenStudy (anteater):

and they say area of base is 1 acre or 4840 yd2 and we'd have to convert that to feet or

OpenStudy (anteater):

square feet, I mean

OpenStudy (anteater):

or convert the height to yards

OpenStudy (anteater):

So yes, height in yards

OpenStudy (anteater):

6 X 10 = 60 feet = 20 yards

OpenStudy (anteater):

and then if we multiply 20 by the area of the base in square yards, we'd get a volume in cubic yards

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the area of the base is 4840, correct?

OpenStudy (anteater):

Oh, half an acre area, so 1/2 times 4840 yd^2 = 2420 yd^2 base

OpenStudy (anteater):

So then that 2420 yd^2 times 20 times 1/3

OpenStudy (anteater):

Calculator time ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm.. I got 3904

OpenStudy (anteater):

I got 16,133 yd^3 , but let me see.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hold on let me set up degree mode.

OpenStudy (anteater):

Shouldn't need that for this problem. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh there we go, I got the same answer.

OpenStudy (anteater):

I think your first answer was correct. Do they ask you to round to the nearest hundred cubic yards?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It says estimate the volume in cubic yards.

OpenStudy (anteater):

Ah, then yes I think your first answer was right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alrighty, last question of the day.

OpenStudy (anteater):

How do you award medals anyway? I'd like to award them back, but I am so ignorant about how to do that!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You don't have to do that for me. Click on "Best Response" then it gives you a medal. I've been trying to figure that out since I joined this site lol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Gives them*

OpenStudy (anteater):

Ohhh - ok thanks! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have one more question that I'll be posting.

OpenStudy (anteater):

Well, you had figured it out ahead of time. So there you go. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol, thanks anyway.
