In 1595, people could only know of the play if they had seen it at the theatre or if they were the actors in the company playing it. It had never been published; that would happen two years later. Since it was first published in 1597, many editors have gone through it, changing spellings and correcting what they think are errors. Sometimes they have censored it or have taken the censoring out.
