The headright system encouraged the growth of plantations in Virginia by establishing a race-based slave system that provided plantation labor. giving land to colonists who paid for servants or enslaved people to come to Virginia. giving food, lodging, and employment to people who came to Virginia to work as servants. allowing proprietors to establish laws for the colony and make a profit from the colony.
