The printing press which featured movable type which was invented by Johann Gutenberg, popularized literacy among the masses. That invention caused Europe to bolt out of the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance, by making available the decimation of information to vast numbers of people, which in turn generated various levels of religious, political, social, and economic progress on a scale never before witnessed. One might safely conclude that the Gutenberg invention may have been the internet of it's time.
