well you need to write 2 equations... 

let your numbers be a and b

so using the information 

a + b = -3            the sum of the numbers

a - b = 7              the difference
-----------
2a = 4                 add the 2 equations to eliminate b


now solve for a, and then substitute into the 1st equation to find b.
