Usually political machines gained their power from immigrants. They would get a large immigrant voting base and all they had to do was help the immigrants in return for thier vote.

He was a corrupt leader of Tammany Hall. Thomas Nast, a cartoonist helped to uncover his corrupt politcal leadership. He embezzled millions of dollars from the states funds and he is a the poster child for muncipal corruption. He used immigrants( i think they were irish) to vote him into office. He is basically the definition of a political machine.
