It is a unicode character. Right click my code... the a, and then go to Show math as and select TeX Commands.

While MathJax supposrt Unicode, the browser may not see eveything. Like this music character: \(\unicode{0x1D176}\)

In fact, I can't see the As I typed. But most people can. Not sure why. LOL. I can see a sun section mark. \(\unicode{0x00a7}\)
