There are 25 people competing in a race. In how many ways can they finish in first and second place?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25 choice for first place then 24 for second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by the counting principle it is therefore \(25\times 24\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

300 ways if you are doing probability.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but if you are multiplying you do not get \(300\) that is for sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 600

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is true however you take a calculator and plug in 25nCr2 and you get 300. 25 as in people nCr because order does not matter. and you want only two places. so the answer is 300.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't have 300 as a choice but I do have 600

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of course order matters first place is first place you win more money than second place

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is true you can't win first and second good call.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks
