Is the following relation a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If each x corresponds to exactly one y value, then it's a function

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You can use the vertical line test to visually determine the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What's the vertical line test?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you get a pencil and trace it across the entire thing, if no two points are 'touching' the pencil, then its a function

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and you keep the pencil vertical throughout the whole test (pass it over the graph from left to right)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so that picture is a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

notice how there are no C curves its just one wavy line, no flip backs or straight up parts.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if I do the pencil across the thing and two points touch the line I draw then it's a function?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if two points touch the vertical line, then it's NOT a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no if it ouches its not if your doing it and thre is a backwards or forwards C shape then its a non function
