How was the Second Great Awakening important to slaves' religious beliefs? Choose one answer. a. It created more tolerance among slave owners which gave slaves their first chance to choose a religion. b. It made it illegal to punish slaves for going to religious services, so slaves could learn about the Bible without fear. c. It allowed many slaves to convert to Christianity because owners felt the converting would make slaves more obedient. d. As owners became more understanding during this movement, enslaved parents were allowed to teach their children about religion.
The main purpose of both the 1st Great Awakening (1730-1755) and the 2nd Great Awakening (1790-1840) was to inspire religious revivals within communites throughout the Original Thirteen Colonies and later the US, whom pastors had felt had gotten away from God. It started under strong preaching under Johnathan Edwards and George Whitefield under the messages that sin had destroyed Anglo-American culture and only God could save them by grace. Thousands came to Christ during these series of revivals and the Protestant churches, typically Methodists and Baptists, grew rapidly during these periods.
