Is anyone GOOD with Algebra word Problems

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ali and Jake went on a cross-county trip. They took a train part of the way, and took a bus the rest of the way. They traveled a total of 1328 kilometers, riding on the train 254, more kilometers than the bus. x=kilometer traveled by bu y= kilometer traveled by train how many kilometers did they travel by train?

OpenStudy (eyust707):

the total amount was 1328. and they used both train and bus That means: the amount by train + the amount by bus = total amount

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok

OpenStudy (eyust707):

or using their symbols and values: x + y = 1328

OpenStudy (eyust707):

but wait they gave us one more piece of info

OpenStudy (eyust707):

the amount by train is 254

OpenStudy (eyust707):

y = 254

OpenStudy (eyust707):

x + 254 = 1328

OpenStudy (eyust707):

now just solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

=1074

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i really suck in this

OpenStudy (eyust707):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (eyust707):

oh wait a minute

OpenStudy (eyust707):

i misread it

OpenStudy (eyust707):

"riding on the train 254, more kilometers than the bus."

OpenStudy (eyust707):

that means: train is 254 more than bus y = 254 + x

OpenStudy (eyust707):

now we have two equations: x + y = 1328 y = 254 + x

OpenStudy (eyust707):

id substitue what y is equal to into the first equation, solve for x , then solve for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok
