The black codes were instated in order to limit the freedom of recently freed blacks. Thus instead of giving blacks the same rights as white people, the codes limited the blacks freedom severely. The specific limitations were: Blacks could not carry weapons, vote or hold public office, or meet in large groups. The "Black Codes" showed how southerners wanted African Americans to return to submissive positions in society. It didn't allow them many rights as free men.
