OpenStudy (anonymous):

for what..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and did they give you basic questions for the research paper or did they leave it all to you..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to write about what was happening the time he was writing post war. This is what she sent me "Use John Updike and research about what was happening in our country at the time he was writing. Find an event, etc... which may have influenced his writing and show that by using quotations from one of his pieces."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm okay.. well first of all you want to start by talking about him when n where he was born.. it would probably even give you extra credit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so let me give you a head start and let me know if you are okay with it..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright. This will help so much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first let me just make sure to let you know when and why was his first famous novel written.. its because after he traveled with his wife to his wife in china.. after he MOVED his family to Ipswhich he then wrote a novel that was 600 pages long called HOME

OpenStudy (anonymous):

after he traveled with his wife to china* sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh. I didn't know that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

after he completed his first famous novel "home" The Poorhouse Fair.. and in 1960 that book received the Rosenthal Foundation Award of the National Institute and was a National Book Award Finalist.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Later that year he published Rabbit Run funded by Guggenheim Foundation. In 1962 he completed his short story Pidgeon Feathers and it was published in America’s Best Short Stories book. Then in 1962 he wrote Olinger Stories that were basically based on his early days in Shillington, Pennsylvania../ 1962-1982 he receives honorary doctoral degrees from Urinsus College, Moravian College, Lafeyette College, and Albright College. And all these colleges were in Pennsylvania where he grew up..!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then finally in 1971 he completed Rabbit Redux it is a National Book Award Finalist. In 1981 he finished his 3rd of a 4 set of novels called Rabbit is Rich it recieves many awards. In 1981 His first novel The Carpentered Hen is awarded the Pulitzer Prize for a fiction novel.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1984 The Witches of Eastwick was written and later made into a movie staring Jack Nicholsen, Cher, Susan Sarandon and i think it was Michelle Pfeiffer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry I'm trying to read all of it that's why I am not responding.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

finally in 1990 he wrote his last rabbit story called Rabbit at Rest where Rabbit returns to Pennsylvania to talk about his childhood. In 1991 he receives his second Pulitzer Prize for Odd Jobs. He is one of only three authors to receive two Pulitzers which was a really important award to a novelist..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont worry about repllying darling i understand <3 lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK so, John Updike was a VERY materialistic writer :\.. all his writings were based on his life experiences and of course his early years in pennsylvania..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which means that every story really had a point and a deep meaning that alot could relate to..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

earlier Updike was unfaithful to his previous marriage so in on of the stories his characters were self absorbed, concerned with their own importance and worried about death. He talked about morals and that nobody had morals. BECAUSE of his experience with his previous marriage and being unfaithful

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I read A&P. But I have been having a hard time trying to figure out how to write about so thank you so much for helping me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Story Pigeon Feathers took place in New York, parts of New England, and scenes in England but the story always comes back to Pennsylvania. Updike’s characters from the story are taken directly out of his life. The schoolteacher in the story was his dad and the inhospitable mother was his mom in real life. The girl, shy boy, and Olinger in the story was based on his life in his early days in Pennsylvania. ohn Updike is said to be one of the 20th century’s greatest writers. He wrote about his own life experiences in his stories and all his problems he has incurred as he was growing up. His stories are not enjoyed by all people because all his characters are arrogant and self-centered and it’s different to have no compassion for his characters, and that makes it hard want to read the book.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem darling i hope this helped :\

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):
