Carbon! This is mainly due to it's ability to form four different bonds and as such it is part of a huge number of different molecules.

Just to give you an idea...carbon atoms form the basis for carbohydrates, fats, and proteins which, aside from being a big part of what you eat, also represent a large part of what you're made of! Your DNA is also composed of compounds with carbon backbones.
