I need help with graphing inequalities, anyone?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

do you have a problem we can work on ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Choose the correct description of the graph of the inequality -x > 3. Choose one answer. a. Open circle on -3, shading to the left. b. Closed circle on 3, shading to the left. c. Open circle on 3, shading to the right. d. Closed circle on -3, shading to the right.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

oh...you mean graphing on a number line... learn this.. if there is an equal sign in the problem, then the circle will be closed if there is no equal sign, then the circle will be open if it is less then (<), then the shading goes to the left if it is greater then (>), then the shading goes to the right now lets look at our problem... -x > 3 --- we do not want x positive, so lets multiply this by -1...but remember, when multiplying/dividing by a negative, the inequality sign changes. -x > 3 ---> (-1) x < -3 no equal sign, so it is an open circle....less then means shading to the left, so open circle on -3, and shading to the left.....answer A any questions ?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

oops....messed up...typo...we do not want x negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30 people could explain this to me and i still wont get it. I am the worst in math of any sort but im kinda getting it. Could you help me with a few more?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yep..what ya got

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But could we go through it step by step so i can get the hang of it?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

of course we can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Choose the correct description of the graph of the inequality -5x greater than or equal to 25. Choose one answer. a. Open circle on -5, shading to the left. b. Closed circle on -5, shading to the left. c. Open circle on 5, shading to the right. d. Closed circle on 5, shading to the right.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

-5x > = 25.....we want x by itself, so divide by -5, but remember that when dividing/multiplying by a negative, the sign changes. So if we divide by -5, what is x ? Can you do this and find x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one second. ill do it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x<5 .. ?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

almost...what is 25/-5 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-5 so it would be x<-5 ?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

you cannot forget the equal sign..that would make a difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so, x=<-5 maybe? i have no idea.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yes..that is correct. Now notice that there is an equal sign in the problem....that means that the circle is closed. That eliminates choices A and C. Now notice that the inequality sign is less then....that means shading goes to the left...if it helps you remember, shading goes the same way the inequality sign is pointing. So what do you think the answer is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a- open circle on -5, shading to the left?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yep..you got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a few more if you can?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve the inequality 6x - 8 > 4x + 10 Choose one answer. a. x > -9 b. x > -17 c. x > 9 d. x > 17

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

6x - 8 > 4x + 10 -- we want all the x terms on one side and everything else on the other side. I will do this step by step, so you can understand. 6x - 8 > 4x + 10 --- subtract 4x from both sides 6x - 4x - 8 > 4x - 4x + 10 --- combine like terms 2x - 8 > 10 -- notice that the 4x's on the right side cancel out..now add 8 to both sides 2x - 8 + 8 > 10 + 8 -- combine like terms 2x > 18 -- now we divide both sides by 2 2x/2 > 18/2 x > 9 if you have any questions, pleae ask

OpenStudy (anonymous):

already lost you, After subtract 4x from both sides. How do i do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually i figured it out

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

you figure it out ...thats good. Do you have any more questions ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i still have a few more problems id like you to help me with? Lol your really helping me out.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I am here to help :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

step by step is best! Which of the following is not a way to represent the solution of the inequality 2(x - 1) greater than or equal to -12? Choose one answer. a. x greater than or equal to -5 b. x less than or greater to -5 c. -5 less than or greater to x d. A number line with a closed circle on negative 5 and shading to the right.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

2(x - 1) > = -12 --- distribute through the parenthesis, that means multiply the 2 by everything in the parenthesis. 2*x - 2*1 >= -12 2x - 2 >= -12 --- add 2 to both sides 2x - 2 + 2 >= -12 + 2 -- combine like terms 2x >= -10 -- now divide both sides by 2 2x/2 >= -10/2 x >= -5 equal sign means closed circle...greater then (>) means shading to the right. or x is greater then or equal to -5 or -5 is less then or equal to x The wording is a little off on your answer choices, they can't be less then or greater...but I am going to say B because x is not less then -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Choose the missing step in the given solution to the inequality -2x - 14 > -4 + 3x. -2x - 14 > -4 + 3x -5x - 14 > -4 ? x < -2 Choose one answer. a. -5x < 10 b. -5x > -28 c. x < 2 d. -5x > 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

step by step please.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

-2x - 14 > -4 + 3x -- subtract 3x from both sides -2x - 3x - 14 > -4 + 3x - 3x -- combine like terms -5x - 14 > -4 -- add 14 to both sides -5x - 14 + 14 > -4 + 14 -- combine like terms -5x > 10 --- HERE IS YOUR ANSWER now divide both sides by -5 and change the inequality sign because we divided by a negative -5x/-5 > 10/-5 x < -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Choose the last step in the given solution to the inequality 6x - 2 less than or greater to 8x + 14. 6x - 2 less than or greater to 8x + 14 -2x - 2 less than or greater to 14 -2x less than or greater to 16 ? Choose one answer. a. x greater than or equal to 8 b. x greater than or equal to -8 c. x less than or greater to -8 d. x less than or greater to 8
