Angle C is an inscribed angle of circle P. Angle C measures (x+2)° and arc AB measures (16x)°. Find x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Arc AB subtends 16x at the centre, and hence 8x at the circumference, which should equal angle C. Solve for x.

how would the equation go? @mathmate

OpenStudy (mathmate):

What is angle C given as?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+2)°

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Good. As I mentioned, arc AB (or chord AB) subtends an angle of 16x at the centre. This stems from the definition of the arc of a circle. Are you familiar with that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I learned it a long time ago and I cant seem to remember it :/

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Review the definition of an arc of a circle and confirm that this is the case. Then you have probably learned that a chord subtending an angle 16x at the centre will subtend half that angle at the circumference, namely 8x.

don't mind showing the full working @mathmate

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Sorry, I was away for a while. |dw:1402165289717:dw| But since 8x is given also as (x+2) so equate 8x=x+2 and solve for x.

x=2/7?
