One of cults meanings is "a situation in which people admire and care about something or someone very much or too much" so to "achieve cult status" could mean a status where a person is admired/cared about in an obssessive(or a regular) manner.

You could research on who would reach such requirements(being of an occult status and being mythical). As for people who died young after producting works of genius, I think you would just have to research on that part as well, looking for people who died young but had many great accomplishments that were works of a genius
