If its in the 18th or the 19th centuries, novels were considered inferior because poetry had more popularity then because in those times people felt that poetry expressed feelings more clearly then anything else(excluding drama) and they thought that novels just contained stories that were useless (i meant that people felt that poetry was the closest thing to reality and human feelings whereas novels were just imaginary stories ).therefore novels were considered inferior as they failed to portray people's feelings well .
