A triangle has the length of its height and base increased by 100%. The new area of the triangle will be (ANS) times as large as the old area. ANS = 4, but I don't understand why. Thank you :)

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

so like a first step hope you know it sure formula for area of a triangle ,yes ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I know it is hb/2 (heightxbase = hb)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

When something is increased by 100% what is the relationship between the old value and the new?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I don't really understand how I increase it by 100% nor know how to work out the new.

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

yes ,so than the height and the base will be increased by 100% how do you think that the area of triangle how much will be increased ?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Increased by 100% means times 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! That makes sense now, thank you. In my mind, I can only get to 2b2h/2 and hb/2. I can't really work out why it is four still ^_^;;;

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Old area = 0.5bh New area = 0.5(2b)(2h) New area = 4*Old area

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, that makes so much more sense now. Thank you so much skullpatrol and jhonyy :)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Thanks for asking :)
