An engineer is surveying a building with a device that is 6 feet above the ground. He is 60 feet from the building and is looking with an angle of elevation of 45°. How tall is the building?

OpenStudy (bruno102):

Can you check my answer? I think it is 60.

OpenStudy (juicstice):

yeah I'll see if it is right

OpenStudy (bruno102):

Thanks :)

OpenStudy (bruno102):

I can explain how I got it if you need me to.

OpenStudy (bruno102):

Oh wait, it might be 66?

OpenStudy (juicstice):

can you draw it out I'm just having a little trouble picturing it

OpenStudy (bruno102):

Hmm I will try

OpenStudy (bruno102):

I am not quite sure how to draw it out..

OpenStudy (juicstice):

it's okay I think I got it

OpenStudy (bruno102):

Ok thanks

OpenStudy (juicstice):

haha, I'm stupid. okay it's really simple since it is a right triangle and it has one angle that we know is 45 means that the other anlge is 45 which makes it a 45-45-90 triangle the rules for these triangles are that the 2 shorter sides = each other and the hypotenuse is the shorter sides x \[\sqrt{2}\] so yes you were right it is 60 because the shorter sides have to equal each other but then you have to add six to it so it is 66 you are right

OpenStudy (bruno102):

Thank you so much! This stuff confuses me so much!

OpenStudy (juicstice):

yea it can get confusing
