OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you show me how to do it and why its 3

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

It helps to know what the logarithm means. The logarithm of a number, base b, is what exponent you raise the base to, to get the number. A logarithm is an exponent. Using your example, \( \log_2 8\) means what exponent do you need to raise 2 to, to get 8? Remember that \(8 = 2^3\), so the question is what exponent do you need to raise 2 to to get \(2^3\)? The answer is 3.
