foil is the way you multiply these types of equations. It stands for First, Outer, Inner, Last. so (b-3)(b+9) the first two are b and b, multiply those together and you get b^2 then you go to the outer values so b and +9 so you get 9b. so far you should have b^2 + 9b. Then you go to the inner values. so -3 and b so now you should have b^2 + 9b - 3b. and then the last two values to -3 and 9 so that = -27 now you have b^2 + 9b - 3b -27. combine like terms you get b^2 - 6b - 27
