3(4x - 2x) = 8 -- do parenthesis first 3(2x) = 8 6x = 8 -- divide both sides by 6 x = 8/6 -- reduce x = 4/3 or 3(4x - 2x) = 8 -- distribute 12x - 6x = 8 6x = 8 x = 8/6 x = 4/3
