What is the main reason that restaurants, offices, and other public places have separate areas for smokers?

Smoking is injurious to the person taking the puffs but is also harmful to others..which is called as passive smoking. In order that the non smokers dont get affected by passive smoking these areas are segregated. Plus ppl have respiratory disorders and taking in smoke could elevate that.
