OpenStudy (keeli_grace):

I will fan and medal!!! (: State the degree of the polynomial. xy^2 +3x^2 - 7 A. 3 B. 1 C. 2 D. 4 Please keep in mind that I am absolutely terrible at algebra. And it would really help if you could explain how you got the answer. (:

OpenStudy (paki):

you know what is degree...?

OpenStudy (paki):

@Keeli_Grace

OpenStudy (paki):

ok listen.... The "degree" is the term with the "greatest exponent"... like that for y^2... so here "y" is the base and "2" is the exponent.... now what you say baout your question answer...?

OpenStudy (keeli_grace):

No, I don't understand this at all. :/ Do you think you could explain for me?

OpenStudy (paki):

i have explained.... did you understand that, what i said...?

OpenStudy (keeli_grace):

Okay, so since x^2 is the greatest exponent, does that make three the degree?

OpenStudy (paki):

hmmm... what is the power of this...?

OpenStudy (keeli_grace):

2? :/

OpenStudy (keeli_grace):

That's wrong, isn't it?

OpenStudy (paki):

good... then what will be the answer...?

OpenStudy (keeli_grace):

2?

OpenStudy (paki):

yeah... it's "2"...

OpenStudy (keeli_grace):

Oh, so the degree is the greatest power, not the number associated with the greatest power?

OpenStudy (paki):

yeah...

OpenStudy (paki):

have a look here... i will help you a lot... http://www.mathwarehouse.com/algebra/polynomial/degree-of-polynomial.php

OpenStudy (keeli_grace):

Thank you! :) That really helps!

OpenStudy (paki):

hm... pleasure... best of luck...
