So:  you're supposed to "solve"  2x^2 + x – 1 = 2?

Translation:  find all x-values that satisfy this equation.

Note that this is a quadratic equation, because the highest power of x is 2.

Simplify the given equation by combining the constant terms.

subtract 2 from both sides of this equation.

Now you'll have a quadratic equation in standard form.

To "solve" it, you could use any of the following methods:

1) factoring
2) factoring by grouping
3) quadratic formula
4) graphing
