3. Describe how / why the United States was divided at the outbreak of the Civil War.

There are more than 1 reason why the united states was divided. 1 reason was because the North outlawed slavery, while the south still wanted slavery. The South left the Union because it didn't agree with all of the North's ideas about outlaw(ing) slavery.

Slavery had little to do with it, unlike your history book said, it is all about money. When the United States gained independence from Great Britain, most of our revenue was generally made from the southern plantations, now there was some fur trade and other things that created some revenue, but not much. And during the Industrial Revolution, we became rich from industry, and realized that we didn't need the slaves anymore, so we tried to abolish it diplomatically, but the confederate army attacked Ft. Sumter, starting the American Civil War.
