Adversity means:the character went through hard times and that made them the person who they are now

David is a great example...he was shy yet very curious about what lurks on "the other side of things" and later on the book, he becomes more open-minded, confident and outgoing towards other deviations (Sophie,Fringe Leader, His telepath group)
