how did the common people of the middle ages look down on music?

I think it's because people then were different from the people now days. The common people looked down on music because either they couldn't enjoy the music in their home or because it was new to them and anything new was scary. :) just my opinion.

Music in the middle ages, like everything else at the time, was influenced greatly by religion. For example, playing a piece centered on the locrien scale was considered satanic. In fact many still believe its satanic. Metal was largely written in locrien. But scales were'nt the only "satanic" act you could preform musically, for example playing three whole steps from a note in succession was also considered satanic due to the "dark" sound and was considered bringing a note to its opposite self.
