If the question means the variety in the same species, then it would be sexual reproduction (where the genes of 2 persons mix to form a new individual).

Variety in different species exists because of the interaction of heredity and environment.
Different environment forces a species to adapt themselves to it, thus a new species arises. This takes a lot of time and generations. It happens in extremely little steps. Can take over millions of years.

@moss767 @thomaster All variation is from mutation, ultimately. Meaning if mutation never occurred and DNA replication was 100% accurate, genetic variation would never occur and accumulate; leading to possible speciation.
