Discrete means that there are only certain values it can be, and it jumps instantly between those values. Continuous means it can be any value (within a certain range) and travels smoothly between values).

Linear means it changes at the same rate all the time (i.e. 1mm a week). non-linear means it might speed up or slow down at different times.
