So x*x + 17x= 18 right solve for x and x=-1 and x=18   how is that correct??? Plug those into the original equation and it doesnt work???

I have done this equation several times and the solutions are not getting me the area=18? so what am I doing wrong????

x^2 - x +18x - 18 = 0
x(x - 1) + 18(x - 1) = 0
(x -1)(x + 18) =0
so 
x = 1 & -18...ignore -18
