When buying and selling stocks, common wisdom says "buy low, sell high." What is meant by this? Is it really possible to do it? Why or why not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It means buy when the stocks are cheap, and sell when they are expensive. After they have gone up, you will make a profit. Of course, if the market goes the other way, you will lose. Those of us with substantial insight are able to anticipate which stocks are likely to go up most of the time. Among them are some of the much-hated "one percent." For most of us, it isn't that easy.
