Why was this group formed? Protect the rights of the colonists. Stop the abuses of the British government. 3. What role did they play during Revolutionary times? A leading role in my opinion, remember the Boston Tea Party in 1773 which was in reaction to the Tea Act, that was the Sons of Liberty's doing. 4. Who funded the Sons of Liberty? Wealthy people, such as John Hanwingspan.
