In creative writing, must you go by what the subject matter would be, or can you write whatever you want?

In opinion, I would say write as if no one is reading it. Is this a test question of some sort?

No, my creative writing teacher asked this, (I do Cyber school) and I wasn't sure if that was the correct answer, I was thinking that though. The way she explained it made it so confusing, so thank you :)
