The salinity of ocean water is not the same everywhere in the ocean. Which of the following is a cause of these differences in salinity? A. changes in the density of ocean water B. high evaporation rates at the ocean's surface C. dumping of salt into ocean water near coastal cities D. extraction of ocean water for desalination by coastal nations

@dinisha can u help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abhisar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(1) Melting of ice -- causes an influx of freshwater, which dilutes ocean water (2) Inflow of river water -- causes an influx of freshwater, which dilutes ocean water (3) Evaporation -- evaporation is only freshwater, which removes freshwater from an area, causing salt to become more concentrated (4) Rain and snowfall -- opposite of evaporation, you're adding freshwater and diluting it (5) Ocean currents -- surface currents move highly saline waters from the equator toward the higher latitudes, adding salt to highly freshwater (for an ocean), causing a net average to the World Ocean (6) Thermohaline currents -- vertical mixing caused by differences in temperature and pressure, where heavier water sinks and distributes salt. This is the largest distributor of heat energy throughout the oceans, and the prime source of salt to the deep ocean. (7) Wave and wind -- various local mixing causes smaller-scale variations in surface salinity

OpenStudy (abhisar):

It will be B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer maybe B!!! am i right @Abhisar ?? if i am wrong can you correct me??

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Because evaporation causes increase in salt concentration and rate of evaporation is higher at surface since its in direct contact to the atmosphere

OpenStudy (abhisar):

U r crrct @dinisha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

thx
